| | Underground is definately where it's at, these mainstream rappers are both corny and the beats are annoying as Hell. Give me a 5 second soul sample over a repetitive synthesizer melody ANYDAY! | | | |

much agreed
nowadays its the same old punchline being uttered from pop culture puppets just doing what the last guy did the way i see it, if you wanna be original in todays market youve gotta do somethin stupid like create a new slang word for media crazy teenage freaks to eat up hip-hop is crying for a breath of fresh air before it dies of asphyxiation and if, or more precisely, WHEN that happens, who's gonna perform CPR? | | "If a musician could say what he wanted with words, then what would he say with his music?"

| I ain't worried 'bout it too much, sure it's going down the drain. Reason being, the mainstream pop culture keeps artificially adding things to hip hop that are not part of it. This to (like mentioned before) boost sales, create new trends and with that again boost sales of related merchandise.
And we let them do it. If you going to blame some one, blame you the consumer.
I almost choked on my brewskie, when someone posted that Mysto track in the other thread and everyone creamed their pants. That track was a pure copy of what in the nineties was called hard techno or gabber. Point beeing, sure things most evolve but don't call it hip hop when it no longer is.
Example of music evolution:
Uk Garage -> Grime -> Dubstep
Now try to convince Benga that he is making UK garage :)
When it's all said and done, real heads will be waiting, in the basements banging out that Boom Bap BoomBap, cutting records, spinning on their backs and pushing out aerosoul (pun intended).
Hip hop is not Merchandise or a brand name, It is a movement, culture and a way of life. And will stay alive, ss long as there are creative people who need to express them selves with that positive raw energy our culture provides. Ofcourse I gotta leave you with some knowledge:

Well commercial music is that artist('s music) that started doing his thing, and eventually was signed to a record deal so he now sells ish and makes money (successful or not) but STILL DOES ONLY HIS THING
COMMERCIALIZED is that artist that started doing a thing with the purpose of making money. He was signed to a record deal. Now, all he does is do ish to be commercially successful, and makes only ish that's "in hype", changes his style to be in hype etc.
I hope you understand now
Commercialized isn't always a bad thing. LL Cool J switches up his style all the time, so does Will Smith and so did Lil Wayne. Sometimes you gotta make the change in order to survive. I hate Wayne's new ish but listen to his old mixtapes and you'll find out this dude was a lyrical genius since 16 years old. You could never know that when you listen to "Lollipop", but if its gets dude the cash I can't call him out for it since I'd want the same thing. Very few people can keep their style and still be successful, and those cats have been in the game a lonnng time (Jay-z, Nas, Ice Cube, Eminem, etc.)
So if some people gotta switch up their style to get the cash, I don't see nothing wrong with the artist. Its the audience I'd be pissed off at. | | HSTraxx.com

| Just because theres mainstream bullish and sellouts doesnt mean hip hop is dead. Theres still people with a message, people with inspiration and love for music out there. Just Dig around! Its painfull to see these fake as suburban kids bumpin soulja boy like they gangsta or some ish but hey! let em like the wannabe no meaning crap pumped on the radio, maybe when they really start listening to words or evan reading lyrics , just maybe they will open their mind a bit. For me its about the love. Its about spreadin the truth. Its about infromin fools who aint got clues. Its about openin minds who blind from the rules. Its about Sayin how ya feel but with some clever tools. Its about the good time the bad times the in between. The freedom to live the life that you wanna lead. Do it for the love or sell yourself for greed. Its like the red or blue pill Decision nigga who you gonna be. | | Real eyes Realize Real lies | |

| I'm not even going to speak on the IT, SB beef, it's old as Hell. All I'm going to s gay is that Ghostface would throw Souljah Boy down a flight of stairs instead of flapping his gums like Ice T did after Soulja Boy responded.
Hip Hop is not just a genre, but it is a culture, based around the elements of Emceeing, DJing, Break dancing, and Graffiti. Eventually break dancing and graffiti became less prominent, and it's now focused more on the emceeing and DJing aspects.
As far as a good DJ, Premo is the prime example.
As far as a good emcee there are various elements. There is the flow, and the lyrics. If you got flow, and you can ride a beat like no other, then I would consider you a respectable emcee...as long as you do have lyrics to back it up. Biggy would be a prime example of someone with ridiculous flow. As far as lyrics, you need to be creative. I'll use Nas as an example for this. He's spit a story backwards, spit a song from the perspective of a gun....and his rhyme patterns are ill as funk.
Example of a rhyme patterns: Sip criss, get chips, wrist gliss, I floss Stick shift look sick up in that Boxter Porsche Rich kids go and cop the source
Note how it's not only the end of line that rhymes, he mixes in more complex rhymes to string the lines together....I guess I don't really know how else to explain it.
Didn't mean to go off and just mumble on about ish like that, I just wanted to put the fundamentals of hip hop into perspective for ya'll. Of course there are plenty of rappers who are ill in those regards, but who's better than who is all opinionated.

| ^ great post
i love look at rappers patterns and flows something kanye does is keep the last word of the line the same, or very similar, and rhyme the word before it, not ground breaking but sounds so nice.
not the best example but, from I wonder "do you even remember what the issue is? you jus tryna find where the tissue is you can still be who u wish u is it aint happen yet and thats what intuition is"
^thats a bad example actually, but listen out for it, he does it alot | | http://www.soundclick.com/2ndman

My only problem with kanye is that he is one of the biggest sellouts in the industry. He's not even close to being half the emcee he was on The College Dropout.
and another one of my favorite rhyme patterns right now...dunno who here is familiar with Elzhi of Slum village, but this is off his song Fire.. Check it, What I put down in the sound coil is crown royal its like I dug in the ground soil and found oil Im known to terrorize, paralyze a pair of guys, or prepare to rise of the land sea air and skies. snatch his heart, but spare is eyes to show em why im great, violate, and i annihalate, my punchlines aint just tossin jabs, they often grab, they put you in a boston crab caution, they say im psychosomatic in the attic, my automatic stick to my clothes like static cling on, better kiss the fist while the rings on on the winning hand 4 aces now a kings drawn/

| | i didnt bother to read so don't kill me! In my personal opinion,I believe people only like "rap" or "whack/bad hip hop" because it's what they see/hear everyday and they want to fit in with the crowd. Or maybe they just actuall like the horrible lyrics. | | | |

You're right on point. If this horrible music wasn't shoved in peoples' faces everyday making it all they hear, than all these cats out right now would be a mockery. Heltah Skeltah just dropped their new album and ish on anyone and everyone in the industry right now. They reintroduced hip hop.
