| It seems like your doubting my infinite wisdom on this one young padawan? So here is the low down, these companies may not send you spam directly I'll give you that. BUT you must look at the bigger picture. What they do is set up these kind of "competitions" where people need to invite others and/or register to the site. And whoever gets the most new members gets a video game for $30 or what not. What they don't advertise in bold print is the fact that all your personal info (including mail adresses) and possible interest/habits are safely locked away in their database. Soooo.. You may say. Well the cost of them giving out games etc, is nothing compared to what they earn by selling these adress lists to other companies. Haven't you ever wondered how you get advertisement that fits your needs? Not many computer/tech interested people get the new barbie catalog eh? The way advertisement works is this. When you do a large campaign, you will need to direct it at the public that is most likely to buy your service/product. The fastest and most efficient way to get a list of those is to purchase one. There is a large pool of companies that provide this service. The advertiser want's a list of 10.000 males, ages between 16-25 in the Ohio area. No problem, will cost your 50 cents per name and adress. But the seller needs a database before they can sell one... Well they can either go out and hunt for the people, do surveys etc. Or they can sit back and have a cup of coffey and let the targets do the work and give them something that costs them a fraction of the money it would have otherwise. You following me now? This does not solely ably to evil name grabbing companies either. Many large corporations make extra money using your name. Next time you subscribe to a magazine or sign up for a news letter... read the fine print | | | |

| Yea drawing off supermarkets here. They have clubcards, the idea being everytime you shop there, you swipe your club card, and you get points for how much you spend. End of the year you cash up your points, and you can get some nice rewards, days out to theme parks, air miles, money off shopping etc.
The benefit to the supermarket is now it knows exactly what you buy, it can then know a lot about you. If you buy napies, it knows you have a baby, you buy lots of alcohol, it knows your a party animal. So when they send you some coupons in the post, you always get coupons for things you need. A 30 year old male living alone isn't getting a coupon for 20% off lipstick.
Now this doesnt seem evil, where as places like lockerz do. Think the main difference is its a supermarket first, and the clubcard is an add-on. lockerz is solely devouted to it. And with a supermarket, you only get rewards if you spend alot, so people see it as a reward scheme, lockerz costs you nothing financially.
But think of it like this, the supermarket now knows your name, address, number all the details like that. It now also knows your living arrangements, your family arrangments, your eating habits, your interests, what you do in your spare time, what your favourite drink is. It can also get a good idea of how much money you earn. And they have this for millions of people. They essentially know everything they need to know about you, and more.
