17 Aug 2009 04:33 PMUsing other peoples beats
Right now im putting together a mixtape, and some of it is going to include original beats by me or maybe even some beats that i might lease from other people.... but im also probably gonna do some songs on other peoples beats. (edit - like famous peoples beats)

ive heard people do this on mixtapes before, but im wondering about the legal issues here because im hoping to sell my mixtape. im also planning on selling the individual songs on soundclick.

has anyone done this before. or know how this works?

now, this might just be me...but aren't mixtapes usually free?

eitherway, you'd have to ask the guy(s) who's beats you wanna use if you can record on em and put em on your mixtape. Plus you'll have to let em know you plan on selling it...cause they'll prolly want some money from you. But i'm by no means an expert...but when i sell to someone who plans on makin money off the project my beats on...imma want a cut u feel me?

i've had people send me e-mails like that i just wrote and they never follow through lol. but yea, just ask those dudes they bound to say yea lol. they crazy to turn down business aha

my bad, i didn't really word that clearly, but by other people's beats i mean like using a nas beat or a redman beat ya know what im sayin, like famous beats that people already have tracks on (i know ive heard famous rappers like lil wayne etc. spit on other peoples beats) ...

as far as "mixtapes" being free... well, if thats true then idk what to call it haha... i guess its gonna be a mixtape that i wanna sell... maybe i should split it up into 2 projects, a mixtape for free and then a cd i wanna sell...idk

Nah lucas mixtapes are not free they have never been free, maybe promotional mixtapes. as for putting famous folks songs on ya mixtape, you know they or whoever they are signed with is gonna come at you for copyright reasons as usual, so just go in hard on making yah own tracks and go from there do some collabs with cats from diff sites. I am sure some up and comers would love to see their name in the production of a project.

Ooh subtle vote hunting there, just slip it in down the bottom.

Can I just ask why they are called mixtapes when, I presume, you're not using cassettes?

aaaah, sorry boutt he mixtape = free mix-up lolz.

Well, like slliks said you might get some bother from labels if your mixtape makes good progress and you get some plays in some big places. If you use a beat nas or someone has on an album. If i were you i'd play it safe and try and get on beats that aren't owned by a label. There's plenty of folks around who are lookin for rappers. Maybe link some of your work and people will offer you beats

People been rapping on instrumentals forever, no-one gonna come after you unless you crack the top40 with your mixtape. why would they? there not losing anything off it, and your only profitting slightly.
why's jay-z putting out all his instrumentals/acapellas if he doesnt want people to rap on them or make remixes from them? its free promotion really, you buy his instrumental CD, he gets paid. you then rap over his beat and everyone goes "hey, thats that jay-z beat".

tbh, if people are worried about rapping over big selling beats on a mixtape there gonna sell locally and maybe just cover there costs on it, i think its a kinda worrying state.

btw, get on wu-tang beats if your that worried, rza gives you permission. he said he doesnt care if people download his music, as long as there listening

well, the thing is im not trying to spend a lot of money... the whole reason i started making beats was so i wouldnt have to buy them, but then i realized that making beats is hard lol... some of mine come out good but they rarely end up sounding how i wanted them to sound when i started making it.... so then i figure maybe i will spend some money and lease maybe 1 or 2 beats, but if i do any more than that then i won't even make enough money off the mixtape to cover the cost of the beats... so thats why im looking for free beats that i can use, but still be able to sell the songs without getting in trouble

Well, i know i make free beats that i give away to people. And i'm sure there's many others that do the same. So you should try PM'ing some folk you like the sound of to see if they have anything thats free you can use?
