| Don't ever say soccer anyone, ever. Its called football. Though I'm a little obsessed with basketball right now. And on the siubject, AGC never ever ever ever ever say London, England as you would Phoneix Arizone or capital, state. Just never. Say London, then if someone asks where London is then you say its in England, Great Britain or United Kingdom would be acceptable answers as well, but England would be preferred. Also on that, SP or T.I. can you explain the whole Netherlands, Holland Dutch thing? Because I know thats something similar but I've never understood it. And I can see where Fisha's coming from. Globalisation is essntially Americanism. Started with a free market economy, which is fine. Now its cultural, which is generally not fine. Its not USAs fault, its kind of become the natural order of things. But when peope here say flashlight, or sidewalk, or SOCCER, it does touch a nerve. You feel your culture slipping away from underneath you. Asia is also picking up the AmericaniZed English, and again its understandable, you can't argue with it, but then that view translates to all English speaking countries. All English speaking countries have there own mannerisms and phrases, theres always differences, but it seems only American English is being taught round the world. Even on continental Europe American spellings and versions of words are being picked up more. O and Candy=Sweets here (and GrandPhantom saying candy also demonstrates the point ). I also don't eat sweets. | | AIM - The2ndMan2

I also don't eat sweets. Ahh yeh you see what I'm getting at. It's fine for Americans to be American, nothing wrong with that, but when Australians and poms start becoming American its just a bit sad to know that your country is losing a bit its own culture in place of someone else.

I also don't eat sweets. Okay, Im a Dutch person, like you are a British person. You live in the United Kingdom, we live in Holland OR, as we like to call it, the Netherlands. The name Holland is a very old one, because we were ruled by Spain a long time ago and we were actually a quite large country since we also got a big part of Belgium under our control (meaning Spanish control). Then we fought a war to become our 'own' country with Spain, and we won. So we became the Republic of the Seven Netherlands (Netherlands actually means something like Low Lands here. If you translate Nether to Dutch, you get Neder, which is a very old word for Low or Lower than something else.) This name is because the Netherlands' majority of land lies below sea-surface. Ofcourse this would mean we would live under water, if it wasn't for some brilliant people to build dams and waterworks. So, the Netherlands is the current name of our land, Holland is a more oldfashioned way of calling it I guess. Also, the Netherlands looks like a plural word, but here we call it Nederland, so its actually a singular word (not like the United States i.e.) The word Dutch, I dont know where it comes from, is used to describe the people who live in the Netherlands (The Dutch) or as an adjective (The Dutch weed). I hope this clears things up And to correct myself: I hate sweets.
