Outta Sight, Outta Mind

by Taylor Barclay on 21 Oct 2009 12:46 PM

What did you do to make something in your life better today?  I ask this question because well, frankly, it’s a question that needs to be asked.  This last month, after finally being able to think about myself and clear my mind, I’ve come to realize something:  We’ve only got one life to live.

This life, in the moments of waning hope and the moments of orgasmic pleasure, is a one way road.  What happens when we get to the end of that road and the time spent sitting in front of an XBOX outweighs that of building strong relationships with other people in our lives?

I know you all know people like this in your lives, you may even be like this to some extent.  We’re all guilty.  Even me; I said I realized this fact, I didn’t say I acted on it yet.  I’m still sitting here with Morrowind installed on my computer, although it won’t be for long.  But it doesn’t just involve video games:  That’s only the tip of the iceberg.  I’ll follow that with the following question:  What are your goals?

If you thought “I want to be a music producer” then I could follow with this:  Do you have any technical knowledge of the process other than recording spur of the moment stuff by pressing record in FL?  Do you know the logic behind music?  Do you know the definition of a producer?

My point isn’t to grill anyone on their hopes and dreams, but realize you likely won’t be spoonfed a music career.  Any career takes ambition, the direction you put that ambition is likely to be called GOALS.  And that brings us almost full circle; almost.  If you put together a list of goals and just work as hard as you can towards those, you will most likely earn it.  Alternatives:  You can earn the Goldbrand in Morrowind by moving a mouse for hours, you can sit around and talk about plans but never execute, and the list could go on.

I’m just as guilty as all of you are.  Even some of my friends suffer from this “Goalitis” as we’ll call it here at my blog.  As I said I’m starting to realize why this won’t work for me in my life.
I breezed through high school.  No not breezed; I slothed my way.  Most of it wasn’t too much of a challenge for me, so I didn’t take it seriously.  Didn’t care.  The few classes that did challenge me (Spanish my god..) I would wait until I couldn’t wait any longer to finally try then barely pull through on a final.  The outside problems, which I had many, are no excuse to not try in school.  I just didn’t give any effort.

This connects to my above point here:  When someone tries to carry their behavior from an environment such as high school into their adult life, problems arise.  You can’t use the same behavior I used in high school in a workplace; your ass will be burned to the 3rd degree (fired).  You can’t use that attitude with personal relationships in your life either: you’ll end up being known as the unreliable and bum friend (that plays video games all day).

So since it’s obvious this behavior won’t work for topics above, do you think this will work when you want to be a music producer (or any career for that matter)?  Who sits around and says they’re a lawyer because they read a chapter in a law book?  I’m not a dentist just because I can floss my teeth.

So this is the part where the blogger says the solution to this problem.  Well one problem: I don’t know.  Even if I did, I don’t think a page of text would cause someone to have an epiphany.  I know it wouldn’t have a large effect on me, I would probably just lock it away in my head.  You know, that little spot in your head that you put things you know you need to do but never do.

You know what I’m talking about, those stories that old people tell you about what they wish they did different.  So before I hit my golden years, I think I’m going to start making gold out of the years I have now.
If it isn’t blue water it’s murky water; which would you rather swim in?

I actually read this whole thing and contemplated it. I feel the same way you do, time after time. We are not going to stop feeling this way, because if we do, our lives would be perfect. So my answer is find that delicate balance of content and ambition, a balance that veers you forward swiftly, but not too swift as to make you feel like your on a roller coaster. Find your goals, realistically set up a plan on paper or atleast in your mind to overcome that obstacle. Do not worry yourself to death about any certain one, because the only thing you can do is your best. If you do that then... whats there to regret? You already did all you can do, right? Like I said... find that balance, and you'll find yourself content during every phase of your life.

The term "moderation" is very relevant here.

moderation is right. all work and no play is just as bad as all play and no work.
