so with the mixer...do you use it as just a pre for your mic? or do you actually run instruments through it too?

and now that i've typed that..its probably a silly question...because i'm sure you have live artists come in and record too right?

Ill take a guess... If he records at home he use m-box preamps... And mixer is just to connect monitors (maybe not even that)

Theirs Never a such thing as a stupid question thats what i've learned only a stupid person who thinks its to much work to just answer it lol.

But essentially the mixer is to connect both of my sound cards (M-Box and Alpha) to so that my Monitors can play from both without me having to pull out the monitor chords and plug them into each when ever i used one of them. The Next logical question is why are you using 2 different soundcards? Well Anyone who has an M-Box or any other Digidesign audio unit knows that Digi never makes media drives for their soundcards. So the M-Box only works with Fruity Loops or Protools when if i need to check an artists myspace or even listen to my own song on itunes there would be no way to listen to them through my monitors. Last Question would be why not try another media program like Windows Media Player that can change sound drivers? the answer to that is i have my preferences and i prefer to use itunes especially since i buy music off of it and i also have an ipod which needs to use itunes.

That makes sense. If you're using PT, a mixer is almost mandatory. It'd also help switching between sound sources, such as 2 different PC's or switching between 2 different monitors. A mixer is probably next up on my equipment list.

ok..so you have the computer running to the mixer...then the mbox and your other soundcard coming from the mixer. coming from the mixer...hmmm...i'm trying to figure out exactly how you have it running...cause that sounds like a very practical set up that i might want to incorporate...cause recently my windows media player will not allow me to use the mbox as an output...

or maybe i have it backwards...lol...it just hit me..

you've got both the soundcards routed to the mixer...then the outs on the mixer are to your monitors...right?

^That'd be the only way I can think of...

Do you get errors when running both soundcards on the same system? I haven't tried the Mbox but I've had 2 cards both connected to my PC and could never get them to run simultaneously.

Nope i have no problem another good thing about using 2 sound cards is that i am able to open itunes or any thing on one and use the other for fruity loops. Which means i can use my itunes at the same time im making beats on Fruity Loops or Protools. Yes my Mixer is outputed to my monitors and both sound cards output to the mixer.

yeah...

HS, the mbox is basically like an external soundcard. its totally separate from the soundcard built into the computer. mine runs on USB. the only thing about it is, it only has 2 outputs. if those outputs are taken, then you can't open up another program to use it. i didn't like that too funny b/c its easier for me to listen to a song i want to sample in windows media player rather than load it up in FL. but if i have my mbox set as my soundcard for WMP, i'd have to close the mbox in FL, then open WMP back up. so basically what i had to do is have a separate receiver with separate speakers to hear my other music.

but with the set up KDE has...he can run everything through his monitors. i like that. its times i want to run stuff through my monitors too. i can also listen to music on the web through my monitors with that setup.
i'm definitely getting a little mixer for this purpose...

i knew me coming to this blog would be an asset...lol..

I have the BX5a's too, they are sooooo nice.
I use to run two soundcards, and I would lag because they were both trying to act as the main unit.
But now I just use my tascam us-144.
