Well it is kind of the backbone of the genre. Or at least it used to be.

Really? My ignorance on the subject of hiphop has been shown many times before so I may be horribly wrong but I still havn't found much lyrical depth in hiphop. Even the ones that should be deep and meaningful tend to throw in just one bad rhyme or one shallow sentence and throw it all away.

Hence your ignorance. Not sure why you would know, you're a "techno ambassador".

"Substance" could probably be a better word than "depth", or "creativity", but you can't say that it can't be found anywhere. Either you're not looking hard enough or you just don't appreciate it. Simple as that.

Oh donn't get me wrong I'm working on my ignorance, and need your help. Please direct me towards some tracks that don't talk about how rich and succesful someone is and preferably one that doesn't involve everyone being called a mother funker.

Jurassic 5 is one. The Pharcyde is considered. Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Mos Def, MF Doom... Hell, basically any fairly renowned underground artist.

one, t-pain has tracks with him singin with out auto-tune, hes not a great singer but he can manage, and if he loses fans, remeber, i don't kno if ya'll heard him rap but the dude is sick, listen 2 karoke from t-pain and say he's not.

two, auto-tune was originally made to correct pitch errors when singing, so while recording if the singer is off key, auto-tune edits the pitch in real time. when t-pain uses it he configuers it so that the editing is really strict. the correction levels is all the way up so any off key note tricks the program and it tries 2 find the correct pitch. if u ever use it you will notice that the t-pain effect is not a preset, u gotta configure it yourself.

I agree

Look everyone already knows what autotune was originally made for. No one's denying it's usefulness. But D.O.A. isn't against autotune. It's against these pop artists who make the T-Pain affect autotune can produce so uniform in hip-hop. It's against the artists who put use it because they have the notion in their head of "oh well T-Pain used it and he's rich, so if I use it, I'll get rich, too" completely disregarding lyrical substance and originality.

Honestly think everyones trippin on auto tune to much, first off its very new to the scene. Sooooo its uses are limited atm, you never know some big artists at this very moment could be workin with it to try something new. Give it some time to grow.

Actually, Divine, Autotune's been around for a while. As was said earlier, it was originally made to naturally correct the pitch of someone's vocals so that if they missed a note or something in a recording, it would be a real time saver because they wouldn't have to go back and do a million takes to get it to sound right. Then, T-Pain comes onto the seen in the early 2000s and finds a new use for it. Now, recently, it's blown up and everyone's using it.

What you have to realize is that no one's hating on the effect it creates. People like Jay-Z are hating on the artists out there who think that autotuning their voice guarantees an instant hit.

My opinion, is that Auto-Tune is fine. But when its overused by people like wayne, who clearly cannot sing and for some reason try to, that is when it fails. In T-Pain's case, and Kanye's, well, I simply cannot argue with them because when they use auto-tune, they can make it sound good. Cause I think Kanye can sing, and he has done so much for hip-hop you'd be wrong to diss him for using auto-tune on an album. Wayne tried to carry it over to rock, which failed. And I love wayne, but as Jay said himself, he would give the verse to a MIXTAPE weezy. That's when wayne is at his best. No auto-tune. Even Game has a song with auto tune now, 2k10 I think its called.. But I mean, what I'm trying to say, is if you can pull it off and make it sound good, I guess its alright to an extent. Jay is just standing up for the real hip-hop.. Which quite sadly is being overloaded with utter rubbish from soulja boy... >_>
