That is not what i am saying the ? is what genre are you? what genre represents what you do, or which do you favor not what you make or if i use so and so it is this or that
So you have no favourite genre of music?

| Haha I know what you mean man, I listen to tons of different music and I was just thinking about how I would answer that question I asked you and really it's bloody hard. I think it would be punk but I would feel really sad without my alternative rock and techno. | |

| Why is it that people are all to willing to jump into their little boxes when it comes to defining what kind of music they like or make ? It seams like people can't just make music now without having to name and classify what it is,and it ends up being sub genres of sub genres. I don't know whether it's people trying to make themselves sound more and more exclusive and trail blazing or they just need to pigeon hole themselves so they feel they belong somewhere Sorry for the rant sometimes it's good to vent !!!

| If you're trying to convince people to listen to your music the first thing they want is a genre. It's important to remember the genre comes after the music. Just because I say I make hard trane or whatever doesn't mean that I attempt to make hard trance songs, I make my music and then decide which classafication it falls into. So you have to remember that when a person says what genre they are it is an observation not a restriction. | |

| Blues-Rock Sounds like: The guitar of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn or B.B. King... mixed with contemporary urban feel. Think, "what if Stevie Ray Vaughn hung out with Timbo? or "What if Jimi Hendrix made a joint with Dr Dre?" or "What if B.B. King did an album with RJD2?" Bash: This is the kind of crap I would put in a press kit I was sending to a booking agent or management company If I was looking for a job as an artist. I listen to and make a lot more types of music than this but if I was gonna get back in the biz this is what I would put down in a press kit. If I was gonna do it as a producer I would probably modify it to fit video game music production or something like that. I feel you on your points completely from an artistic viewpoint but most people (consumers and even some musicians) are not open minded like that. If an A & R person gets a press kit that says "Influenced by all good music" or "Versatile" or "Completely original, sounds like nobody before him/her" they will throw it in the garbage I promise you. As arrogant as my little blub sounded and completely subjective (Who says I sound like Jimi Hendrix? What in the world makes me think there is anything at all similar to my music and Timbo's? What gives me any right to say any of this nonsense?) It's complete b.s. but that's the business. Most of the music lawyers who can get you a record deal and such don't know anything about music at all. They just know what the press kit should look like and who to send it to. Management teams know what kind of magazines or websites are good for reviews of certain types of music that they may have never heard in their life. All these people want to know is what isle of wall mart it will go in and that the isle in question is big enough to warrant their time. It's a good idea to give some thought to "what type of music would I make if I could only make one?" or "who would be most likely to buy my music?" If only for the purpose of practicing your blub making skills. I think once musicians progress beyond the "this type of music sucks, this type of music is the best" type of thinking this is the main thing that hold some of them back is they forget that most people NEVER get beyond this stage. Some people need simplifying. You can't enforce "enlightment" on people. (At least I haven't figured it out yet, if you do please let me know, lol) | | | |

| My last post wasn't a direct dig at anyone in particular slliks it's just a viewpoint I have .I have met people who have only ever listened to one type of music ,I not saying this is bad I'm just saying if you open your ears to new music it's surprising as to what you might like.
I still prefer to listen to Hip Hop as my main choice but good music is good music no matter what the genre . I used to just listen to Hip Hop until I started looking at where the samples came from and found the music comes such a diverse background you can find yourself listening to stuff you never thought you would of and surely this must be a good thing ?
A.G.C I never have and never want to be a commercial artist and it's not why I make beats. I do it because I enjoy it, most of the time I'm the only one who ever hears it and as long as I like it thats all that matters.
I'm not trying to force my viewpoint onto anyone or change what they think I'm just expressing what I personally feel | | | "We are the music makers,

A.G.C I never have and never want to be a commercial artist and it's not why I make beats.
I do it because I enjoy it, most of the time I'm the only one who ever hears it and as long as I like it thats all that matters...
I'm kinda in the same place your are right now at this stage of my life, but if you ever feel like you "can't stand to do anything else" you have to deal with people who ONLY are involved for the money. That's my only point. In other words... there's a difference between making money doing what you love and loving to make money for what you do. If that makes sense.
I was at a point in my life at one time where I "couldn't stand to do anything except music". At that point I had to learn to sell what I did to eat and feed my family. I didn't do it cause I loved music any less, I did it cause it's a "neccesary evil" if your one of the people who absolutely can't stand to do anything but make music. If your not one of those people then I would advise people to stay away from the music business cause it's not that fun... at least the business side of it. Let's say I spent a couple hours a day staying employed when I did nothing but music for a living, those two hours sucked. Calling people on the phone sucks, making up little b.s. blurbs about yourself sucks... I could go on but I put up with those two hours a day so I could do what I loved the rest of the day. It's not worth it to me anymore. So I can understand your viewpoint completely. I don't know if I could make music all day long like I did back then if I wanted to, I just don't have that kind of fire anymore. I was just pointing out that most people who "do it for money" don't "put themselves in a box" because they want to or even because they fit in one... it's just to keep the lights on for most professional musicians. That's different than the "I only like one type of music cause it's what I do" phase that most people go through when they first start doing music seriously. That's all I was trying to point out I suppose. As far as the "I'm the only one who ever hears it and as long as I like it thats all that matters" part I guess my point was that there are billions of people on the planet... what are the odds that you are the only person on the planet who likes your music? Well, I had to take a lot of statistics in college and got a degree in economics and without boring you to tears let's just say that "if you build it they will come" which is to say "supply creates it's own demand" which is to say "you can sell anything as long as your willing to find the right customer". The flip side is also true of coure, the more people that know you the more people that will hate your guts. The music biz ain't for everyone, I'm not crazy about it. I think if I ever "got the bug again" I'd rather do something like videogame music where people don't really notice it but it's nessesary so that nobody ever knows who I am... seems like it would be nice to do what you want and not have to deal with all the b.s. that "commercial music" brings with it. At least that's my thoughts now, I've never done it, "grass is always greener" and all that.

| Sorry everyone if it seems we're jacking this thread !!!!!
Cheers for the replies fellas, I know I can sometimes post something which comes across differently to what it sounds like in my head. Thanks A.G.C. for the personal breakdown of your situation now I know why they say it's 90% business 10% show. Maybe one day I might finally pull my finger out and finish a beat ,then post it up on the site to see what others think !
