hi

ive had an interest in turntablism for a while now, but somethings starting to but me and i cant figure out.

when you listen to a turntablism song (for example Redworm by DJ Q-Bert) you see that the producers use a massive amount of samples in there, like for example even at the start of that song there is the 'I am the redworm', 'Who are you, where do you come from' and the 'Intruder'

this might sound really naive and foolish, but where do they get these samples from? do they get them from tv shows and films or do they have like a library somewhere?

its starting to bug me :S

thanks, i appreciate the answers

yea, get them from records, TV shows, movies, anything really. just build up your own libary. quick way: you could go google for kits and pick up some. better way: go digging and create your own libary
and you can sample from your TV into your computer as well. so you got films, tv shows, video games etc as well

School is in session.

Since it is TURNTABLISM we are talking about, from the beginning DJ had to find those samples on records. Since, well the art form is performed on turntables. Don't look in 70 soul, look into some childrens story LP's Radio theatre etc. Then cats started to press their own vinyl whit their samples on, to be able to use them faster / easier. After that came the plethora of Scratch battle records. Which still sell and are being used frequently. (google battle breaks for example, Qbert among many others have released many of these). Fast forward to present day and the digital era. With time coded vinyl and systems like Traktor scratch etc, you don't "really" need the Battle break records anymore, since now you can scratch MP3's of your harddrive.
