Fourth movement: "Marche au supplice"(March to the Scaffold)
From Berlioz's program notes:[1]

Have a quick read about this one, the composer is bloody insane. This is the fourth movement of his peice. Basically in his story he has fallen in love with this girl it's taken three movements but here's where it is now:
Convinced that his love is spurned, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of narcotic, while too weak to cause his death, plunges him into a heavy sleep accompanied by the strangest of visions. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a final thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow.

Berlioz claimed to have written the fourth movement in a single night, reconstructing music from an unfinished project, the opera Les francs-juges.[3] The movement begins with timpani sextuplets in thirds, for which he directs: "The first quaver of each half-bar is to be played with two drum sticks, and the other five with the right hand drum-sticks".[citation needed] The movement proceeds as a march filled with blaring horns and rushing passages, and scurrying figures which would later show up again in the last movement. Prior to the musical depiction of his execution, there is a brief, nostalgic recollection of the idée fixe in a solo clarinet, as though representing the last conscious thought of the soon to be executed man.[4] Immediately following this is a single short fortissimo G minor chord that represents the fatal blow of the guillotine blade; the series of pizzicato notes following represents the rolling of the severed head into the basket. After his death, the final nine bars of the movement contain a victorious series of tutti G major chords, seemingly intended to convey the cheering of the onlooking throng.

Yeh the clarinet trill then gliss at the beginning of rhapsody in blue is my single favourite musical "theme" ever.

Just a question, I find that I tend prefer the pieces with a full orchestra as opposed to just a small string section or solo piano. How about you?

yes, "in the hall of the mountain king" is here good work! Grieg was ispired by norwegian fairytales about trolls and ish (what do you think the mountain king is?) and I think he captured that feeling perfectly, so every time I listen to Grieg I think of those old fairytales. Griegs music is really national romantic and he puts a melody to the norwegian culture, thats how I feel about it lol

Fisha-Everything..it can be just a single voice singing beautifull melo and tenor add a harmony......i love fulll orchestra for the big sound, color between diff instruments....solo or just smaller works have its own advantages in the sound, harmony, etc......i m a fan of a solo piano,or ,violin tho....cant really describe my opinion good, cuz of my bad english.....
Skrall-.....well this piece based on norwegian(norse) mythology.......the fulll piece called Peer Gynt Suite(2)(based on Henrik Ibsen play,i really recomend to listen the full both suites),and in the hall of the mountain king is the final mov of the first suite......and i imagine the mountain king as a big troll, with his little trolls(u kno trolls is very famous in norwegian mythology).................yes great work by E.Grieg, but i think everything which is above are a really great epic works, all of em have sumthing unically(ofcourse depends on composer ),a must have for those who love good music......

...would be honest..i dont really like modern piano music.but..its not bad for the modern standart, gets boring fast tho, need some variety on the rhythm form, melody and harmony.........but interesting harmony(interesting but repetitive),i can see this in the movie,i wish it has melody, for example melodic bass when the highest notes play arpeggios

nah man, why would i be angry? i didn't write the piece, so it's not like you're criticizing me. I understand why you'd think it's boring - one of philip glass's defining characteristics is his use of repetition, but i have to say i disagree that tha makes it boring. to begin with, you can hae an incrediby complex song, which doesn't communicate any emotion, and you can have a simple song that conveys a lot of emotion. and to me, music is about how it makes you feel. it's like women. for instance, i can see a pretty girl and be like "yeah, she's beautiful", and not be attracted to her, and at the same time see someone who's not that pretty but be like "she's got sex appeal, and i like her character, so i find her attractive". So it's the same with music.
Also, music is about intensity, and part of that intensity is build, and that links to rises and drops in volume. for instance, notice how the woman emphasises different parts of the song and builds up the volume to give it climax - that doesnt change the melody, but it changes the way you feel! It's the same with tempo. And Philip Glass uses changes volume and tempo very cleverly, soi don't think the piece is as simplistic as it looks on paper.
Plus, we're on a beat-making site, and if you like your hip-hop, then repetition shouldn't be a problem for you, you know what i mean?

when i listen to hip hop music...yes its repetitive, but thats whats hip hop mostly bout..........but when it comes to listen to piece of music its another story....aight lets take some example of repetitive musical form(rhythm, ornament etc)....uumm...beethoven adagio sostenuto from his 14 th sonata....u can see right hand playing arpegios thru the whole piece and right hand mostly the bassline.....but the piece never get boring....becuase it has full life in it....it has begining, main theme, modulations, climax, pedal point, calming parts etc......the piece tells a story,it lives.....and in case of this philip glass´,its just need to variate harmony to make it tell me sumthing.......and right now i only hear a piano loop.......nice piano loop..........
