22 Nov 2007 01:20 PMhow to record vocals?

hey, im on a real tight budget so heres my equipment:

- dynamic microphone

- speaker cover (used as a 'pop filter')

I know pros use pre-amps but i just plug my mic into the computer and there i go, anyone got any good software i can download to record my vocals? Thats actually clearer than windows sound recorder? once i get it on computer ill use compressors etc rather than using a pre-amp.

Im 16, aint the most loved dude in school but f**k it, im gonna study business at uni next year, im in my final year of school.. Im a rapper/producer from Auckland New Zealand..

yeah it was.

i use it every day in windows, mac and linux. it was only 75 dollers when i bought it.

probably less now.

to get the same quality recording i'd have to buy a mic for close to two hundred and a premic for about $150.

it has some draw backs, your usb cord can only be 14 feet max, i think, so its no good for stage.

and your app can only use two or more usb mics if your app supports it. audition does

so i don't mind, but there are some that don't.

but if money is a problem then the samson c01u condencer mic could be an answer for you.

also i must say again, i don't suggest recording the way you wanna go about it.. its more trouble than it's worth, the results will never sound profetional.

just get a usb mic. and asio4all.

if thats still to much money than look at this.

Hey yall, I have the same issue. I wanna record vocals but I'm not willing to spend too much.
All I have is sony soundforge and FLStudio.
I have a "ghetto-cheap" mic that ppl use on skype, and a "ghetto" pop filter.

1) My homie who was a music student told me "dont use a dynamic mic for home recording. use a cheap condenser". i know she's quite experienced in recording vocals so i take her word for it but at the same time i've googled it and there are websites that say that dynamic mics are fine so i'm confused.

plus

2) do i really need to get a preamp? or can i just record on soundforge with just a mic?

i didnt really understand the tutorial in http://slavebell.orgfree.com/tutoriall.htm
edit: according to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24gOzxE4oh8 the vocals get recorded more on the left channel? does that happen to you Mr Thraz?

FYI, you record vocals in mono, unless you have several mics or multiple mouths.

LOL ok. thanks for the info. i dont know much about recording vocals.

I'm watching video reviews on Samson CO1U condenser mic and it looks like they simply connect the mic to their PC.

So do i really need a preamp or can i forego it?

(P.S. if you ask me, i'm only willing to spend my money on just a condenser)

(P.P.S. and maybe a mic stand and the anti-shock stand for a condenser mic)

edit:
anyone else recommends any other type of mic or any other brand or model?

hey peeps, my homie just told me about usb condenser mics, and she said

"but u better pray hard that ur pc sound card can supply enough power to the USB mic..cos if there's a surge, ur mic is dead..."

how do i know if my sound card is the right type for the job?

an even noober question i have is, how do i check my sound card on my laptop? i dont even know what im using. all i know is, my laptop is 3 years old, and it's still going (altho it shows signs of dying once in a while).

I kinda like Acid as far as software, there's a free ten track version here:

Acid Xpress Free Ten Track Software

Amazon has quite a few usb condeser mics with good reviews as well as Audio interfaces with Phantom power like the Edirol UA-4FX that is supposed to be good, I just bought it and am waiting on it to arrive.  Main thing with audio interfaces is finding drivers that work good (with windows at least) it took me a long time to find something that (theoretically) works with Vista.  Now I got a USB condenser, it's ok for a certain sound.  I play guitar the best analogy I can come up with is (to rip off Tarentino) either your a fender strat man (like me) or a gibson les paul guy, you can like them both but not equally.   I think some people are like that with condenser vs. dynamic mics like the Shure SM 58.

Thing is, a lot of Hip Hop was recorded with a Mackie Mixer and a SM 58, if you had something like the Behringer U-Control Uca222 which is about 40 bones a set-up like that could work depending on what sound you like, or you could use a cheap condenser like the Behringer XLR for 40 bucks with a Mackie that has phantom power.

To say "always use a condenser"... I'm not sure how often "always" applies in music...

Do you need a pre-amp, not if you use a USB mic BUT, if they fit it into the mic, what are the odds that the preamp that is built into the USB mic (they have preamps built in) is as good as one that is as big as the mic and then some?  Why would companies make them that size if they could be just as good and fit in the palm of your hand?  I don't know the answer to that but It kind of made me wonder...

:S :S :S lol i'm confused at the last paragraph. thanks for the info tho.

My audio driver is realtek ac97 that's all i know, and i intend to use soundforge to record audio (cuz i learnt how to do that in school 1 or 2 years ago lol). i'm not really sure if my laptop's soundcard wld be able to supply enough power to a usb condenser like samson co1u, so i'm looking at normal condensers and a preamp. basically it's like this

Plan A: i get a usb condenser mic if i'm absolutely sure that my laptop will not murder the mic.
Plan B: i get a non-usb condenser mic and a preamp.

my assumption is that plan B is gonna cost me more, but it won't cost as much as me getting a new laptop with the right sound card.

as far as behringer is concerned, someone warned me that behringer products are real cheap cuz they dont last very long, so i dont think i would get a behringer product.

behringer products are actually pretty good.. Their mixers for instance last a looooooooooooooooooooonggg time..

btw a tip for you (and anyone else for that matter) if you wanna know what's "inside" your pc/laptop google for a program called 'Everest Home edition'..

It has helped numerous of times..

This product shows what typa hardware is inside your pc as wel as the drivers it needs and it gives you direct links to the drivers you need for your hardware...

It's a banger ..
