There is no special tipe, i use everything i think will sound good. Then adjust with some eq and thats it. There is no such thing as basic notes, everything that sounds good 2 you.

yah, get your own thing going. if you try to do stuff like others its not original. if you absolutly have to know, i start all of my melodies using an fl generator and my keyboard (the one for typing) i dont even have a midi controller.

read up on some music theory and learn some scales that should help u with what notes to use
