Here are some things that will get you started.

A music software program with, piano roll, sequencer and mixing console, MIDI out controller, and virtual instruments. This could be, FL, Reason, Cubase and other crap.

A MIDI keyboard or controller with, MIDI IN AND MIDI OUT interfaces, headphone jack, and Line interface (used for Audio format recording from keyboard)

NOTE: MIDI is not technically audio, they are musical notations used for making audio, but basic MIDI keyboards generally suck. Good ones are a Triton 88 Key, or a Motif. If your gonna use a basic MIDI keyboard then music software is absolutely necessary.

Other optional equipment for the intermediate to super producer is a drum machine/sequencer/sampler such as a MPC or the Alesis knock-off. Many music programs can do the same thing as an MPC, but many aspects such as sampling and drum patterns can't be done with such ease.

Also, as far as software goes FX plugins are absolutely necessary, because sample drum kits sound terrible, and if your gonna use them, FX are necessary. Look into a good 7 band or Parametric EQ. I use a graphic EQ and a phase anylisis for vocals.

The last thing which is the most underatted equipment, a creative mind.
Learn to experiment with your sounds, don't restrict your self to sounding like a certain producer and EVENTUALLY, you will come into your own. When you get good enough at beat making, the same people will be trying to sound like you.

Anyways, good luck. I hope I was some kinda help to yall.
