Whats up every one...I was allways wondering why most of the mudic dtudios have dual monitors? Is it just to ease things (u can run more programs at once) or does it have a "greater" meaning to it? If i remember well, NFX, u said that u got duals as well...Sure its cool to have them. but do they really help u?

thx

nice question, alot of people dont really know the answer to that one. But most of the time its to open cubase, protools, or fruity loops or any other app on one monitor and then show all your plugins and extra addons on the other monitor for dual display. Basically like you said more room to see stuff...

Dual monitors (screens not speakers of course) give you more room. The way I use it with FL is to have FL open across both monitors. I'll have my step sequencer, piano roll and browser on screen one and playlist and mixer on screen two. as for plug-in and other windows, I just move em around so they are not in the way.

I really got hooked on dual monitors when I started using them at work. I could have a help file or google open on one monitor and my programming environment on the other.

Actually this is a good question...in most of professional studios ive seen on TV (cribs, making da band etc.), and ive been to 2 myself, they seem to have these "homemade" like speakers...why is that? And why not get something like a speaker system from, for example, Creative?

heh well another great question u can use basically anytype of speaker form as long as u know ur studio sounds limits. what to change and sort. but the best thing to do is record ur beat or track and listen to it in car, home stereo, friends houses and such.. but if u go with computer speakers go with the logitech Z-5500 or the creative inspire 7.1 make sure u have at least surround of 5 speakers and at least some sub maybe 6in or 8in minimum. i use the Z-5500 and its awesome plus i rigged it to where i can hook my home sub which is a cerwin vega 12 to it being pushed from my home reciever because down here bass is what will make or break a song so i got to make sure it hits goood....but try different stuff for sure bud

No. But monitors are better. The key to getting a good mix on any speaker is to listen to commercial quality CDs and then aim for the same sound in your own mixes. Once your ears are trained you can do it. It's just much harder. The reason is that studio monitors (speakers) are specially made to give you a flat response. That is to say no extra bass or treble. all frequencies are balanced. This means you are hearing the most pure sounds you can get and chances are that making a good mix on monitors will sound good on awide variety of systems. So if you do not have monitors some things you can do to improve your mixes:

1) turn off any extra bass or treble. I used to send my sound through an old AKAI deck that had this "T-Bass" enhancement. It made ny stuff sound really good at home but crappy when heard on other systems. Turn all EQ off and set bass/treble to the middle or 0 position (some soundcards or decks will allow to put in negative treble or bass, you do not want it removed, just flat).

2) Listen to reference songs similar to the mix you're going for. I can;t tell you how many times I listened to the Chronic 2001 right before doing a mix down.

3) Don't listen too loud or too soft. Too soft and you will overcompensate the lower freqs, too high and you will undr compensate the higher freqs.

4) After you do a mix, listen to it on a minimum of 3 other systems (car, anothe computer with different speakers, Stereo, boom box, etc) Take notes on how they compare, what common flaws are in all of them? What strengths?

NFx you should put that ^ lesson about monitors and mixing either in the articles section or in the NFX blog. I learned from it and it would be incredibly great for newcomers (im not a newcomer by the way).

two monitors is 100% better than just one. there just aint enough room on the screen for everything in most programs. and like nfx i found that out in work having to go back and forth between crap is annoying and distracting when you are staring at thousands of lines of code

some people have 3 monitors

ive heard of people getting 16 monitors on windows xp

but microsoft says you can only do 10

Monitors, because headphones won't pull out that bass. But I reccomend to have both.

if you want to go big you got to have monitors (speakers)...since i have them my mix and master for drums, bass and other low Hz sounds was 100% better...but teh other monitors (screens) you dont have to buy them rather spend your money on sound monitors. dual screens just give you comfort, but the sound stays the same and we dont want that

i think having dual monitors is like having a nice jewelry on when you go out lolll. Sign of status almost....IT IS helpful to have your audio running in one and your mixer in the next so thats a huge plus.

No need for dual monitors if you connect your tower/laptop to your 36" TV.
Anyone reccomend me a pair of monitors that they use or have seen used, that can give me the right range of frequencies, however sticking around my price bracket of £100-200.
Cheers, Adam.

dual monitors, well I record between 2-8 live instuments at a time. I use it for luxary dont see any other use. one monitor used for me, the other for musicians to all follow, so they can watch playlist for punch ins, time markers, basically what there doing, and if to explain something I can just slide it to there monitor to see, or highlight what part there off if they dont already know themselves.

Well basicly on one monitor u see tracks, and on other mixer.
Its for luxary but also its very usefull if u record a band in limited time...
For home studios u dont need it but they are so cheap lately so...

i say its quicker and faster production, having the mixer str8 on another screen is great, also the playlist or ur sequencer, it HELPS alot wen ur doin Studio recoding, in Cubase/PT/wateva coz wen a artist comes in, and they recording/paying u in time, they prolly get pissed coz u takin like 50 years to flick through the mixer sequencer just to record a new take.

As for normal browsing and ish, dual monitors are sorta useless. coz u dont need it. but that imo.

also wit headphones get sumthing over $20 coz the rest are bananas.

Can anyone reccomend me some monitors (speakers)?
i really dont know where the quality is at with those things.
i want some that have that really ''average'' sound to it, so i can finally start mixing my tracks to a commercial fashion.
ive got a budget around €250 + - so it cant be too expensive tho :p
any help is really appreciated

actually headphones give you a little too much bass (at least those that cup your ears well)...so you'll over compensate by cutting the bass down sometimes..so it's good to have both headphones and monitor speakers...

as far as monitors go

M-AUDIO studiophile av-40 $149 for a pair at musiciansfriend.com

those are the only ones i found so far...

but be careful when you look...cause most of the prices are for one speaker only...
