19 Nov 2009 02:43 AMcomposing background music for documentary video, commercials, etc

hello...i was just wondering if any of you have any tips or links to where i can find resources or tutorials on how to learn to compose some kind of background music or sounds just like you see in the movies, commercial videos, documentaries, etc...

I know it would take alot to explain what kind of music or sound goes with what type of scene....but since I've been composing many kind of beats in different styles (hiphop, reggae, rock, country, etc...), they are all meant for songs. So I have this oppotunity on getting a job in a TV station here in my country, and they require someone who can produce/compose background music for documentaries, commercials, etc.....I know its common sense that you wouldn't put hardcore music on a sad part of the movie....I'm not that stupid FYI. I just need you guys to help point me in the right direction...

So since you are all well experienced in different areas of compositions....pliz give me your ideas or links on how exactly are you going to achive the right sounds/music style that matches the right scene on the video clip, etc...

thnk you very much.

i Love the background music of BBC World News by the way

Dude this isn't just something you can step into. Bassically you're gonna need soooo much music theory because you need to compose in so many different styles. I suggest 3 years of classical training then try again.

The only tip I can give you besides on gettin' your compo skills on point.. like VERY on point, (cuzz making music for movies or the like isn't on da level of composing a hiphop song) is to practice on your "arrangement skills". When composing music for background shizzle the new genre (say classical) will abide by a whole new way of arranging your music to match the movie and keep it interesting along the way..

ok before anyone else jumps in and write comments....I'd like to add on more about myself. Ive been composing many many different types of music styles/beats including classical music, etc...for almost 7 years now. I'm a graduate music student and I'm also taking online courses on Music Production/Sound Engineering.

Since I've been/still composing musics for songs most of my time in a private studio....I've never get a chance to compose just music for documentaries, etc...So if you are saying that its a totally different field, then fine....I'll learn it....just need to know How to get started, Where can i learn it (links) and how long would it take....If it gonna take another 3 years...well watever

Woow, n i really thought its not gonna be that hard

yes i can....but Im not like Beethoven or Mozart...hehe. Since I don't expect that I'm going to compose for an orchestra, then I think i won't be needing writing notations for my compositions since its a TV station and deadlines are short so I'm expecting more like composing and producing right away with creativity within short time. Which ofcourse thats what I'm not so experience with...so any short and fast tips would be very helpful. Its a not so perfect TV station anyway so it doesn't need to be perfect....as long as im on the right track

Haha that's exactly what you'll be composing for. It makes up just about all movie music and docos. Adds are slightly different but you'll have to be able to composed for everything from a latin band, to a string ensamble.

Haha yeh good luck. I didn't mean my posts to be rude or anything but you will have to realise that it's not something that you can just do. By the way, what exactly did you mean by music scholar.?

"Graduate Music Student" and you're asking questions on a forum on how to begin composing thematic music?

C'mon Son!

Isn't their someone at school, that you could've asked.  Don't they cover that stuff in 100 level courses?

I wasn't bashing, I was actually giving advice.  Mainly to ask someone at school instead of forums.

@ Fisha.  Right, "Graduate Music Student" Could mean anything.  But it should also mean that music theory shoulda been covered way before his graduate program.

what i would do is study the scene you are composing for. feel it out. pick which parts are climatic, suspenseful...which parts are buildups and go from there. i would advise to come up with compositions that would compliment the scene you are composing for. i'm sure since you know how to compose and all already, you don't need the TECHNICAL advice on actually making music.
