| I'm still "new" myself.. but really since I started all I have used are samples.
I was just feeling like making a random thread about this jus cause I'm in the writing mood. I'm actually working on a beat now so should be focusing..but yeah I was gonna talk about exactly what ure asking about, chopping samples. U can "chop" any sound out there, that's a sample... just because it does not have the oahns and moans like Kanye and 9th Wonder does not mean it's not a sample.... Basically u need a program to chop them, some used to say Cool Edit not sure how many still use that one. Soundforge... personally I dont think all that is necessary, I used to use Audacity it's free. Once I learned the joys of Edison I don't think I will ever want to use anything else to chop samples with.
I'm not really gonna sit and write a whole tut about it. The main things I guess that I've you can say, been told.. is when u chop a sample try to cut it at zero crossing points. For practice take a bar from a song u like and cut it up. I usually cut on every snare and kick but there are some exceptions. Zero crossing point is basically the point in the song where no noise passes. Every beat in a song has a zero crossing point... that's why Edison 2 is perfect because it shows u the zero crossing points when u zoom in.
Next is arrangement, this is the area I'm still working on....for now the best I do is cut everything up how I want it then play the cuts back in different order using FPC.... That's one way to arrange a sample, u just cut it up and play it back how u want it. I use FPC because I have an MPD16.
Most cats like Kanye and 9th chop up different parts of the song... similar to playing it back in FPC I guess, only instead of playing the sample back they kind of build it in an audio clip channel. Like this dude here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2HZcB2VcIw
Hope this stuff helps. Good Luck! | | | student at work :

| nah you don't need an mpc... here's what you do...
open up slicex and click the arrow on the top left and look for presets>sustaining... choose this so when you press one of your chops it will play all the way through instead of having to hold it down
then take a 2-4 bar loop (that you have already stretched and saved at the tempo you want) and drag it into slicex
then you can chop it however you want, but a good idea for a beginner is just to chop on every beat
set the "cut" on each marker to 1 so they will cut each other off
then the qwerty keys on your keyboard will basically function just like an mpc...
i like to set up a simple kick snare pattern while i play around in slicex to try and find a good pattern for the sample, then i lay it out in the piano roll and start constructing the beat.... | | myspace.com/doctorj88 | |
