Can anyone give me any advice on how to break up the monotony in a beat. Im ok at laying down drum patterns but I have trouble breaking up the 16 bars for the verses and the 8 bars for the hooks. Is there any sort of formula I can use to help me with this? What should I do to break things up and make the beat sound more interesting? Thanks for the help.

I change my beat every 8 bars. so it doesnt sound the same thruout the whole thing.
i use simple tricks tho. Crash cymbals. Reversed Crash cymbals. Drum breaks. High strings for the chorus (if they fit). muting the drums right before and after the chorus. taking out hi hats, putting them back in. changing the drums for the hook. adding instruments/taking away instruments. etc.etc.etc.

Haha if people have payed any attention to my posts they would know that I always talk about tension and this is why. It stops the menotony. Things like filter sweeps, added instruments, simple harmonies and adding and taking away layers are all the things you need. The other thing is embelishment, things like snare rolls, little percussive hits at odd intervals, so they don't hit in every pattern only when the flow needs them. Also little instrumental hits doing the same thing. What is important is if you find a cool sound you have to resist the temptation to use it everytime the pattern plays.
