Poor man's copyright - refers to the method of using registered dating by the postal service, a notary public or other highly trusted source to date ...

The concept is based on the notion that, in the event that such intellectual property were to be misused by a third party, the poor-man's copyright would at least establish a legally-recognized date of possession before any proof which a third party may possess.

I heard this term and it intrigued me. Is this a better and of course cheaper way to have some proof of copyrighting to some extent? Is this a faster way then waiting almost a year for you papers to come in officially?

If your like me you dont have $45+ to proof every single beat if it most likely wont sell  (I make alot lol)

1)The poor man’s copyright can be faked, in several ways – easily

2)The poor man's copyright has rarely been heralded as a success anywhere that we can find online

3)A poor man’s copyright is not technically needed to secure a copyright.

4)A poor-mans copyright could leave you even poorer, if that’s all you have as proof of copyright

Do I think its works a temporary  solution for a problem as to having some sense of security along with my FLP or whatever you use file and voiceovers on my beats.
Yes, but only until I have a chance to REALLY* (copyright)do it..

What do you guys think? Am I totally off here? I would love to get some mods opinions.
for more info on this check the sources that I place above

Darnit, I made a nice post about this but it got erased.

Short version:
Anyone reading this might want to take a look a this: My Free Copyright

I'm not giving legal advice and don't know if that coupled with your original wav stems and project files will hold up in a US court. But hey, it's always something and they are not trying to get into your pockets.

Even these solutions don't really work... for the US at least.
Before court, the only thing recognized is the US registration.

you could always save $45 and copyright a cd full of beats, or $200 and get your beat company trademarked, then there automatically copyrighted cuz there made in your name. but any one who knows about copyrights could u answer this question 4 me. my beats are made under the name dade county productions. i own the domain dade county productions.com, does that mean the name is protected, and if the name is protected, is anything produced under that name protected
DADE COUNTY THA BEST!!!!! and thats MR. Dade County to you................. battle record 1/0

Yes I understand the US process of copyright registration. I just find it very funny that one company alone can have a monopoly over keeping "trusted" record of copyrights. And surprice surprice, it has found a way to charge for something that is fundamentally free. The services are no different from the free alternatives and the security is not better either, so what gives?

Not many here are lawyers by trade, and even less people have actually gone to court in a similiar case. I'm willing to pet that alot of it is just parrot talk

No your name is not protected by just owning a domain. You will need to register your business first, then from there you can ably for local and country wide protection for your company name. Or you can ably for a Trademark that will give you global protection for your company/brand name, but it is very expensive aswell. Not something a "basement" producers usually can afford.

Actually I overexaggerated it.

But registration is required to get statutory damages in case of litigation. So you might have a proof that you are the copyright owner...but before court you won't get any compensation for any copryright infringement if you are not registered to the US Copyright office.
So better be sure and register things properly
