| ^ You're using a BB Code which is not supported by these forum try this code instead: <(img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/1978_dj_playing_music.gif")> Remove the brackets i put in there.. You gotta use classic HTML language.. If you forgot some codes check out echoecho.com and slide over to the html tut. section.. Hope that helps.. | |

| Yeah Fisha I feel ya! If you had been listening to music all of your life, rhythm and tension should come naturally...You couldn't have explained it better.
TIP: Make sure you have inspiring sounds. If your heart doesn't pump when making your song or beat, it's a sign that you need to upgrade your sounds. | | | "Our 'what If's' are fears best friends - The rule for overcoming fear, is to head right into it."

Build Tension!!!
Everyone this one is serious! Ever since I've been rating tracks on this site one of my most common thoughts is "you need to build tension". Listennig to a track without tension is like a singer just singing about doing house chores, some people people can do it in an interesting way but in the end it is still boring. For god sake people tension is one of the most parts of music composition. And if you do listen to my advice and use tension in your music don't be afraid to keep it going for a while, the longer the tension the more the listeners enjoyment when it is resolved (to an extent).
And one more thing I forgot to mention off this comment was to keep in mind that some musical pieces require different types of tension. For example, I have a lot of beats or songs where the concept is repetitive yet I'll throw in something say after the forth or eight measure causing some kind of tension. The other way would be like having most of your sounds or instruments switch up on every forth measure. Example: 1,2,3,4 - 2,2,3,4 - 3,2,3,4 - 4,2,3,4(Switch Up)! But it has to make musical sense. It has to ride back in with the beginning. | | | "Our 'what If's' are fears best friends - The rule for overcoming fear, is to head right into it."

| K heres a few.
1) When buying a keyboard midi controler you don't have to go expensive, but you DAM WELL BETTER get one that's touch sensitive. Velocity plays a huge part in dictating the emotion in a song, and it'll take 5 times as long to master manual Vedit then it will to just learn to play well.
2) TRASH CAN KITS can make your stuff sound extra edgy/in your face. U can simply record sounds by bashing random stuff in front of your mic, or you can download, or you can also play around with mixing wood drum/sidestick samples with remastered and trimmed down explosion/gunshot sfx and make your own custom samples (i'll post a tutorial on this one as soon as i figure out how :S). Carefull tho, too much of this will quickly turn your stuff from hiphop to industrial. Not a border too many beatmasterz wanna cross.
3)THAT DAM SHAKER. okay, so i LIKE the shaker ... i really do ... It can definately help broaden the frequency range of your beats, and help get that "all-around" sound. BUT LIVEN IT UP A LIL! Instead of just slapping that thing on at exactly every 1/4 beat for the whole song, play around with velocity and tempo; sweep it in, fade it out, triplets, half times WHATEVER ... just don't let it drone on for the whole loop or it'll get wearing on the ears.
4) BUY A BASS. Just a cheapo....hell buy it from wallmart for all i care! Your software/hardware will do most of the work, but trust me its WAY easyer to learn how to play bass decently than it is to F around with all the bass synths.
5) BEWARE THE CHRONOMATIC TUNER. The frequency of the concert A varries by oppinion, and i've recently bought a BEHRINGER pedal (effective knock-off of the LINE6 POD) that tunes to 444MHZ (FL tunes to 400). Next thing you know you're ajusting ALL your digital instruments to properly harmonize!
**note** plugging yer comp into yer pedal and turning on the tuner is also a pretty good way to figure out drum frequencies
6) THE FREQUENCY OF "A". Piddling around with this is actually a quite effective way to make yer stuff a little brighter or darker. Plus it leaves amateur beat-jackers befuddled as to why it wont work with their stuff.

Yeh you are right, different peices call for different soughts and different amounts of tension. But the only way to know what yours needs and the best way to get it is through listenning and experimenting.

| If you produce East coast or what is called "oldschool" or "90's" "12bit" type beats, I suggest actually sampling drum breaks and using those samples rather than using someone elses drum sounds.. Why.. Because what I usually get is over hyped weak samples.. Stuff like modernbeats, the company with the guy at his MPC there logo, drum kits ive downloaded etc, even goldbaby etc. is not really what im after.. downloaded stuff, or bought samples, They don't do the job for me.. Sampling drum breaks is the way to go..
I recommend using something other than software sequencers.. Izotope iDrum is dope, I would upgrade to an MPC or an MPD pad controller or whatever its called but I don't have much money and MPC's don't really bring $1000's of dollars worth of value to your beats .. (assuming thats the amount you paid for it), although I guess some cats are crazy with it, boon doc or whatever his name is, j dilla, amp fiddler etc, the youtube cats don't really get value out of it if you know what i mean.
I've never really tried pro tools or any program like that, there is nothing wrong with FLStudio or reason or live, its the way you use it.. I mean, until RZA produces something reaaaal dope with protools then maybe ill take notice of it..
If you want your drums to sound dirtier/warmer, I suggest applying a little low pass, multiband compressor -> warmth, maybe even EQ the samples, flangus, and definetly use reverb.. Your results will vary with the samples you use..

| I haven't seen all the tips, but I'm gonna say this:
1. Don't go out spending all your money on hardware you don't know how to use. Master (or get extremely comfortable with) what you have 1st!
2. Learn your scales and keys...enough said. (I'm constantly working on this one!)
3. Try mixing and mastering in other programs or DAWs...you may find one that is more user friendly to fit YOU.

| Tips 1 and 2 there are especially good.
I've heard neptunes talk about mastering what you have before you progress to the next thing. They even talk about using something that can't accomodate you, almost downgrading. Like only having 4 mixer tracks, forcing yourself to find work arounds and little tricks.
And 2 is just good on so many levels, playing ability, learning scales harmonies, being able to improv etc | | AIM - The2ndMan2
