03 Jan 2009 08:33 PMYou ever get tired of hearing your own ish?

It seems like if a beat takes me more than a few hours I get tired of listening to it over and over again trying to perfect certain things. So if I'm not having ideas flow steadily and constantly makin progress I either scrap it or wrap it up knowing it could be much better.

But at the same time I still listen to alot of my own beats just to listen to them like I would any other music. I guess it's just because if the ideas aren't flowing it starts to seem more like work than something I enjoy doing. Maybe I just need to start bouncing between several beats that way I can keep my ears and mind fresh...

Can anyone relate?

Any advice or feed is appreciated.

yeah, or when I finish a beat and I keep listening to it for various reasons, I end up getting tired of it, I know every little aspect of it lol
Also, when I try making a beat, I make the basis, (drums, bass, lead) and get stuck making change-ups or adding more to it, and never finish it. It sounds OK, but empty, and if I try to add anything, sounds crowded.
But I love listening to my old stuff, even if the rap is wack, offbeat, because I like the beats I made, and also the songs reflect MY OWN feelings.
Maybe that's why lol.

Yeah i can def relate. I have more unfinished beats than finished ones, not sure if ANY of my beats are actually finished :D I found as you stated bouncing between several beats is very useful. You might even find in one session that you can combine a couple of those different beats to make one beat that has a lot of variety, or maybe even a big change which is quite interesting at times. I even pulled a beat from my archives from 2007 and remade it which was a lot of fun, so if your listening to a lot of your old stuff you just might find with fresh ears that you can really spice up an old track that you thought was not worth a second listen.

yea i'm always listening to my own beats. I don't usually get tired of sitting in FL with a half finished beat just looping lol, but thats only if i like it, if i don't like it, then i have to start again straight away.

Also, i've usually got like 4 beats unfinished at any one time, in a way its good, but in other ways you want to finish them all and it never quite happens for me. So i either end up leaving it and forgetting about it, or just rendering as it is, which isn't the best idea tbh lool.

I might try going through some old tracks though and using elements in my newer stuff :) Thanks for that GP.

Peace!

I don't get tired easily from my beats.Yesterday for example I looped 8 bars for 4 hours and I was trying to come up with idea and it works.

I try a lot of stuff and I choose the best in the end but you have to be really patient.

yeah i can defenitly relate to that, i got like 5-6 finished beats and about 50 unfinished ones.
the ones that are left unfinished took me so long that i just lost interest.
but when it comes to a finished beat i listen to it over and over, trying to find inperfections and also i just listen to it for fun.
i always get really proud of my creation for some reason so i just listen to it over and over.

Nice to know other people can relate. I think I need to go back and work some more on all my older ish for sure. And if I get tired of working on a track I'll just start a new one and bounce back to it from now on instead of just trying to get one finished.

^^ i used to go back too but everytime u make a better u get a lil better so if u keep makin new ones without finishing ur old ones they start to suck in from your own pt of view and then never wanna finish them...so now what i do is ill make one an just work on it until i finish it..ofcourse there's days when im like i dun wanna work on this cause im tired of hearing it but it also gives my ears a break from listening to it so much. It depends on the person though...thats jus me. If i work on somethin an like it i keep with it if i dun like it i erase it an start new. But work it one at a time now.

to me if you get tired of listening to your own joints it must be perfect and ready for the world to hear, other than that keep listening for reasons like mixing mastering to see if a certain instrument is clashing with another or if you should change this and change that. I never get tired of hearing my own joints that is preposterous, it is practice, training your ear. if you trying to get paid you need to perfect your craft, the real test is to go back to your earlier beats and finish them especially with the weak shhiiiitt g dub puts out he needs to listen to his ssshhiit 200 more times than what he does.
